What is an MBE?

The minority business program was created with the goal of leveling the playing field between small/medium businesses and their larger counterparts. The idea is to designate certain contracts and spending budgets in a way that guarantees the incorporation of businesses that are majority owned by individuals who are deemed to be “socially and economically disadvantaged”. For example, businesses owned and operated by racial, ethnic or gender minorities would qualify for MBE status.

Why work with an MBE?

One great benefit of working with an MBE is that it improves your business’ supplier diversity. This is especially important if your business pursues federal or state contracts, as many government clients require their contractors to spend a certain amount of money sourcing MBE’s. Competition for government contracts is always stiff and having a high level of MBE spending will certainly improve your odds. There are also federal and state tax incentive programs for working with minority business enterprises.

Working with MBE’s can also align well with your company’s corporate culture and values. You can use this to your advantage by making your relationship with minority business enterprises a part of your brand’s identity and marketing.
