After an exceptionally cold and snowy winter here in Baltimore, it felt like the spring equinox would never get here. But six weeks after the groundhog saw his shadow, spring finally arrived yesterday. Just this past Monday the Baltimore metro area saw around five inches of snow from a late-season St. Patrick’s Day snowstorm. The official snowfall count for the season was already at 78 inches before St. Patrick’s Day, and knowing Baltimore this winter, we may not have seen the last of the fluffy white stuff (though we’re keeping our fingers crossed).
Spring always brings talk of spring fever and a feeling of rejuvenation for many, having made it through another long winter. But is there any scientific basis for this, or are we just fooling ourselves? It turns out that there are scientific reasons for feeling more energized and happier in the spring. Research has shown the increase in daylight results in the body producing less melatonin, a hormone that makes you tired, and one that your body loves to produce on short, dark winter days. In addition, research suggests that your brain removes less serotonin in the spring and summer than it does in the fall and winter. Serotonin is a chemical that regulates your mood, and when you have less of it, your mood can suffer. Essentially more serotonin equals a happier you.
Something else that might make you happy this spring is shedding your winter coat for new warm weather clothing.
