A Central Location Test (CLT) refers to quantitative research that is conducted in a controlled environment, as opposed to home-use tests (HUT) where testing occurs in the participant’s home environment. CLTs are particularly useful for taste tests and at Observation Baltimore, we frequently host large-scale CLTs that take place in our state-of-the-art usability test facility. Recruit the right participants
A Central Location Test will only be as effective as the participants you recruit and finding a large number of qualified participants can be daunting. This is why it’s important to work with a market research facility that has knowledgeable and experienced staff members who are able to ensure that quality participants are recruited. Because last-minute cancellations are not an option with such a large study, participation should be confirmed multiple times and expectations should be clearly outlined prior to the test in order to maximize show rates and ensure that your in-facility process is smooth and streamlined.
Organize and prepare
Large-scale CLTs must be very well organized to ensure that the testing goes off without a hitch. Staff members should be assigned clearly defined roles before the day of the taste test and various possible scenarios should be rehearsed to ensure that everything goes according to plan on the day of the study.

When it comes to a study where you are working with 300+ participants, it’s important to ensure that the process is well-thought out so that your recruits have an enjoyable and seamless experience. In many of our large-scale studies, we implement a unique numbering system that allows us to easily keep track of the identity, payment, and seating assignments of each participant.
